Cade Wells had nine carries for 102 yards and three touchdowns as the ACCS Rebels, ranked No. 4 in this week’s Clarion-Ledger MAIS Class AAA poll, rolled to a 44-23 win over the Class AAAA East Rankin Academy Patriots Friday night.
Wells scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, and a 20-yard and a 3-yard run in the third quarter. He also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Chris Smotherman in the first quarter.
Davis Sharp threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to George Scott with 9:28 left in the first quarter.
Wells’ touchdown pass and first touchdown run of the game allowed ACCS to go into halftime with a 22-0 lead.
After East Rankin cut into the lead on Jacob Cordell’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Colt Gibbs, the Rebels went on a 22-0 run over a span of just under four minutes in the third quarter. In addition to Wells’ two touchdown runs, Chris Sikes returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown for a 44-7 advantage.
While head coach David King put in his second- and third-string players for the rest of the game, the Patriots kept their starters in and that allowed Cordell to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers. ACCS and East Rankin each lost two fumbles and had two passes intercepted.
Julian Wilson had 119 yards on 12 carries. Scott had four carries for 66 yards, three catches for 26 yards, three tackles and one-half of a sack. Cole Gatlin had five tackles, one-half of a sack and one fumble recovery.
ACCS (7-2) plays host to Simpson Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
