The Adams County Christian School football team is clicking on all cylinders at the moment, winners of its last seven games, including a 44-23 win last Friday night over East Rankin Academy.
But it’s not the only Rebels football team sizzling.
The ACCS junior varsity team will take an undefeated 6-0 mark into its final game tonight at MAIS powerhouse Jackson Prep as it looks to finish the season perfect.
“We’ve just had a bunch of good guys come together as a football team,” ACCS junior varsity coach Matthew Freeman said. “They’ve bought into the system we’ve got going on, and I feel like it’s all clicking right now.”
The game with Jackson Prep was originally scheduled for earlier in the season, but was postponed. Freeman said tonight’s showdown will serve as a “de facto Super Bowl” for his squad.
“The kids are pumped,” he said. “We will definitely find out how good we are.”
The team’s strength lies in its rushing attack, where the Rebels use a variety of runners to churn out approximately 300 yards rushing per game, Freeman said.
One of those top rushers is D.J. Stampley. The freshman running back said a key for his squad has been its preparation.
“The team has been going good,” Stampley said. “We’ve been having good practices and winning games.
“It’s been real fun going undefeated. I love it, and I know the coaches love it.”
Freshman tight end Rhet McDonald said he thinks a key to success has been the camaraderie shared amongst the players.
“We’re really close,” he said. “We work good together. We’re not going to let each other get hurt or anything. We’re a team.”
While Freeman’s focus remains on tonight’s tilt, he did say he is eagerly looking forward to the potential that lies ahead.
“It’s a really nice freshman class that we have,” Freeman said. “They’re going to be something to watch when they get to the varsity level. By the time they’re seniors, they should be really clicking as a team.”
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to playing our best and taking care of business,” Stampley said.
