LORMAN — Senior linebacker Darien Anderson from the Alcorn State University football program was named both SWAC and College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week, while junior De’Lance Turner was selected SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
The announcement Monday marked the second straight week that Alcorn had two student-athletes earn weekly accolades. Last week, junior Lenorris Footman won both SWAC and CSM Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore Trae Ferrell notched SWAC Newcomer of the Week.
Anderson helped the Braves shut down the Tigers in the second half for a 23-20 victory on homecoming. He led Alcorn with a career-high 13 tackles and aided the defense in not allowing a second half touchdown for the second consecutive week.
In addition to his 13 tackles, the Miami, Fla., native recorded two sacks and four tackles for a loss, resulting in negative 22 yards.
Anderson ranks first in the SWAC with 1.5 sacks and 2.0 tackles for a loss per game. He’s also third in the league with 9.2 tackles per game.
The accolade marked the second time this season Anderson earned a weekly honor as he was named Hero of the Week by HERO Sports on Friday, Sept. 30, after a performance against Grambling State that included 12 tackles and a career-high four sacks.
Turner made a special teams play Saturday, followed by a touchdown to headline the win for Alcorn.
The McClain product came through with a blocked punt to give the Braves the ball at the two-yard line. Turner then punched it in on a two-yard rush for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Turner blocked a punt for the second week in a row.
In addition to his special teams duties, Turner is second on the team in rushing with 308 yards and two touchdowns this season.
The Braves will have a bye week upcoming before returning to action Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host Southern University at 2 p.m. during a Purple Out at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
