NATCHEZ — A 15-year-old Natchez teenager led police on a chase and eventually struck a police car and flipped the car he had reportedly stolen from a Lower Woodville Road residence Wednesday night.
Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford said officers were dispatched to Lower Woodville Road at approximately 11 p.m. after the owner of the stolen 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix followed the teen and called police.
The officers began pursuing the teen headed south on U.S. 61. The teen was driving at a high-rate of speed, Ford said, moving in and out of traffic, and at one point, drove into the wrong lane of traffic.
The teen then reportedly made a U-turn in the area of Jefferson Davis Boulevard and headed north.
“When they got to the area where Walmart is, the suspect got in the southbound lane of traffic and drove all the way up to the intersection of D’Evereux Drive, and he drove up the wrong side of the road,” Ford said.
The teen then reportedly returned to the right side of the road in the area of Popeye’s, Ford said, and eventually ran into a police car, damaging the car.
The teen then flipped the car he was reportedly driving, and the vehicle landed in the median of D’Evereux Drive near Concord Avenue, Ford said.
No one was injured during the chase, and no traffic accidents involving other motorists were caused by the chase, Ford said.
The teen was apprehended after he crashed the vehicle and issued citations for driving without a license, driving on the wrong side of the road, disregard for a traffic-control device and reckless driving.
The teen was taken to the juvenile detention center, and he may be later charged as an adult for stealing the vehicle, Ford said.
“We have to get with the owner of the vehicle, but I’m sure (the owner) will want to file charges,” he said.
Ford declined to release the teen’s name unless the teen is charged as an adult.
