FAYETTE — Services for Mary Sassafras Brown, 73, of Fayette, who died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at Crown Health and Rehab of Natchez, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenleaf Baptist Church in Fayette with the Rev. James Well officiating.   119-marysassafrasbrown-obitpic
Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of West Gate Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 5:45 p.m. today with a celebration of life wake service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Visitation will continue Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
Mrs. Brown was born June 17, 1943, in Gloster, the daughter of Jonas Sassafras and Martha Haynes Sassafras.
She was retired from Vicksburg Box Factory (now Anderson Tully) and Jefferson County Elementary School and Jefferson County High School. She was also a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Mrs. Brown enjoyed traveling, cooking and she loved her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Shelia Matthews; and four brothers, Gulvis Franklin, Titus Franklin, Roger Brown and Joe Franklin.
Survivors include five sons, Melvin Brown, Anthony Brown and wife, Mayola, Johnny Sassafras, Kenny Brown and James Brown; three daughters, Willie Mae January and husband, Joseph, Juanita Sassafras and Theresa Bingham and husband, Mitchell; and a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
