Delta Charter School made history Friday night by winning its first-ever playoff game as the Storm stunned longtime football powerhouse Homer High School 28-26 in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Non-Select Prep Classic – Class 1A Playoffs.
“It feels great. I feel like a lot of hard work has paid off,” Delta Charter head coach Zach Rogel said. “We played with more heart and effort than they did.”
The first half was an offensive shootout between the No. 19 seed Storm and the No. 14 seed Pelicans (3-8), which ended with Delta Charter holding a 28-20 lead.
“On their part, we had a tough time stopping the run. For us offensively, we were balanced running and passing,” Rogel said. “We made some ad
justments (defensively) at halftime. That helped us out.”
Rogel said that both teams started showing signs of fatigue and that was why the game turned into a defensive battle. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Homer did score with about five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to make it a two-point game.
But Delta Charter was able to hold on in the end for the monumental victory.
Lee Lancaster went 12-for-18 passing for 236 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception to go with a rushing touchdown. Mike Smith led the Storm in rushing with 17 carries for 74 yards.
“Lee had a good game. He’s a playmaker. Mike Smith stepped in and had a good game,” Rogel said. “It was a team win. Everyone contributed.”
Dawson Woodruff had three receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown. Drake Smith and Trey Poole also had touchdown catches.
Delta Charter (4-7) will take on No. 3 seed Kentwood at 7 p.m. next Friday in the second round.
