LOREAUVILLE, La. — Friday night’s LHSAA Class 2A second-round playoff game between the Ferriday High School Trojans and the Loreauville High School Tigers was a tale of two halves for the visiting team.
After getting off to a slow start and then trailing 18-12 early in the third quarter, Ferriday scored the final 20 points of the game as the 10th-seeded Trojans stunned the seventh-seeded Tigers 32-18 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ferriday head coach Dwight Woods said his team “came out a little sluggish” and the Trojans let scoring opportunities slip away in the first half. He also said that the long ride from Ferriday to Loreauville had something to do with that.
However, the defense kept the visiting team in the game after Loreauville went up 6-0 with 2:59 to go in the first quarter. Ferriday tied it at 6-6 just six seconds into the second quarter.
“It was a hard-fought, physical game. Hats off to Loreauville,” Woods said. “Our coaches did a good job getting the kids prepared and ready.”
The opening minutes of the second half provided a lot of scoring between the two teams. Jerrius Scott returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown, but the Tigers scored a pair of touchdowns to grab an 18-12 lead.
Then the momentum turned in favor of Ferriday as the third quarter was winding down.
“We had a big stop and we came back and scored right after that,” Woods said.
The Trojans went ahead for good when they converted on a 2-point conversion to make it 20-18 in their favor. They would add a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Ferriday (9-3) will take on Madison Prep next week, which beat Mangham 42-0.
