Adams County Christian School at times looked like a team playing its first game of the season, but at others the Rebels demonstrated their potential Tuesday night.
Julian Wilson scored 15 points while Gabriel Yates added 13 as ACCS got past Centreville Academy 45-34 in boys basketball action.
“We’re trying to get the kinks worked out,” ACCS coach Richy Spears said. “We’re trying to find the right combinations — what people can do, and what people can’t do. Basketball shape is a lot different than football shape or anything else. We have to get in basketball shape for sure.”
The Tigers were led by BJ Partent who tallied 15 points. Tyler Thomassie added nine points.
“We played our best game,” Centreville coach Charles Morris said. “We missed some shots, but it’s getting better. We have to get a little more practice, but I think we did real well.”
Wilson, a junior guard, added 10 rebounds and three steals, and Yates knocked down three 3-pointers. The backcourt tandem are one of several new faces for the Rebels this season as ACCS (1-0) is attempting to replace a bevy of graduated playmakers off last year’s squad, including Devin Spear, Andrew Ratcliff and Brody Cole, and Spears said it’s going to be a transition process in the early stages of the season.
“We’re depending on people that haven’t been there,” Spears said. “We need to work on just being smart, just take what’s being given to us. A bunch of new kids, I think they’re trying to do too much right now. You just have to let it come to you. Just be patient.”
Centreville was without standouts Austen Addington and Matthew Parnell who are in Jackson participating in the MAIS All-Star game. Morris said his squad was hampered without its two seniors, but was pleased with the player’s efforts that filled in.
“All of our guys but three players play football,” Morris said. “We’re just getting going.”
Both teams will be back in action Thursday as ACCS travels to Oak Forest, while Centreville hosts Brookhaven Academy.
ACCS (girls) 74, Centreville 38
Four separate ACCS players reached double-figures as the Lady Rebels raced past Centreville 74-38 in girls basketball action.
Each player on the Lady Rebels’ roster saw action Tuesday night, with junior Brianna Henson leading the way with 17 points.
“That doesn’t happen all the time,” she said. “But it takes every one of them. Every one of them has a piece to bring … To God be the glory.”
Bailey Boyd scored 16 points for the Lady Rebels, while Caitlyn Gamberi and Anna McDaniel had 15 and 10 points, respectively. Gamberi knocked down four 3-pointers in the win.
“They’ve been together a while now,” Hall said. “It’s their time. They’re very comfortable together, and they’ve had a lot of success. Each one has something to bring, and when they put it together, it’s fun to watch and to be a part of.”
Sydnie Lyons led Centreville with 12 points.
