Brianna Henson scored 23 points and Bailey Boyd scored 22 as Adams County Christian School outlasted Trinity Episcopal 68-54 in girls basketball action Wednesday at the ACCS Invitational.
Henson and Boyd along with fellow wing player Anna McDaniel utilized their speed and aggressiveness to create multiple Lady Saint turnovers that resulted in easy lay-ins on the other end. McDaniel finished with 13 points.
“That’s our bread and butter, when we run,” ACCS coach Melanie Hall said. “I think we played a whole lot better today than we did (Tuesday against WCCA). I could see the excitement in our kid’s eyes and that heart of wanting to go play. … Win or lose, to God be the glory.”
With the win, ACCS improves to 11-2 on the year, while Trinity falls to 3-8.
Trinity’s top scoring option D’Asia Mitchell was plagued by foul trouble throughout the contest and was forced to the bench on multiple occasions before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. At the time of her fifth foul, Trinity was trailing by just eight points, 60-52.
“We just did some things that totally took us out of our game plan,” Trinity coach Fay Minor said. “We didn’t want to come out (shooting 3s), because we knew that’s what they expected we would do. Our game plan was to work D’Asia inside, Jasmine (Ivory) take it inside, Alli (Smith) take it inside, then work it back out to the 3-pointer.”
Despite the foul trouble, the senior forward still managed to pour in 19 points, and helped lead an 11-2 spurt to start the fourth quarter that cut the ACCS lead to four, 54-50.
“D’Asia is the real deal. She’s next level,” Hall said. “That was the game plan (to attack D’Asia), and playing sound, fundamental basketball.”
Ivory led the Lady Saints with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
“I fussed at her a lot because she did some (careless mistakes),” Minor said. “We did some things out of character for us, but overall, we stayed in the game until the foul trouble.”
ACCS led at the half 31-24.
Lady Rebel post players Lexi Emanuel and Shelby Mason combined for eight points while also pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.
“I thought it was a really good team win,” Hall said. “Everyone contributed. I heard my girls on the bench encouraging our teammates. When we put it together, it’s fun to watch and fun to be a part of.”
