Cathedral scored the final seven points to come back and defeat rival Trinity 61-55 in girls basketball Tuesday.

D’Asia Mitchell’s 3-pointer from the top of the key with just under two minutes remaining gave Trinity a one-point lead, but Cathedral then demonstrated poise and composure as it managed to close out the game.

Cathedral scored its final seven points from the free-throw line to improve to 3-0 over Trinity for the year.

“Every time we played them our philosophy was to really attack and force them to stop us,” Cathedral coach Peter Arnold said. “We tried to get D’Asia and Jasmine (Ivory) in foul trouble, because they’re a two-headed snake. They’re dangerous, but we were in the double bonus (in the fourth quarter).”

Cathedral (10-2) received balanced scoring from its front-line players as each starter record at least nine points, led by Elizabeth Smith’s 16.

Smith also tallied 15 rebounds, while Grayson Bryant had 13 points, Natalie Fletcher 12 and Marty Lewis 11. Fletcher also had seven assists, and Caroline Kaiser had nine.

“(Smith) is our one true inside player, and she scores every night,” Arnold said. “We look for her and get her the ball. Just about all of (the girls) played well. Baylee Graning was out of town, but the other girls all did their part.”

Mitchell led the Lady Saints with 32 points, including five 3-point makes.

“It’s like it always has been, we ran out of steam,” Trinity coach Fay Minor said. “We got kind of lackadaisical and didn’t show any excitement. I can blame it on the holidays, but I just don’t know. All I can say is we ran out of steam.”

Ivory also had 20 points for Trinity.

Trinity will play ACCS today at 4:30 p.m., while Cathedral takes on WCCA at 2 p.m.

“Some of our younger players are coming along, and it’s going to be a long season,” Minor said. “We just have to stay in it. We’re going to need good defense. When you’re playing good teams like ACCS, you have to be on top of your game.”
