Trinity Episcopal scored the first eight points of the second quarter and never looked back as it routed ACCS in boys basketball 71-36 at the invitational.
Trinity (7-3) outscored ACCS 12-2 to begin the second period, overcoming a 12-7 first-quarter deficit.
“(ACCS coach) Richy (Spears) is a good coach, and he had a little surprise for us on defense, and it took us a little while to adjust,” Trinity coach Andy Blair said. “We have to stop letting other team’s defense stop dictating what we run on offense. Once we got into our offense, we went on a run.”
The Saints, however, did experience a scare after E’Daniel Jones fell head first onto the gym floor in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Play was halted for approximately 30 minutes as medical personnel attended to Jones before the sophomore was transported to the emergency room.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him,” Blair said. “I think he’s going to be OK. It was tough.”
David Jackson led Trinity with 19 points while Jakarius Caston had 10.
Trinity led at the half 25-18 before pulling away in the third period with a 29-8 quarter.
“This is two nights in a row that I’m super proud of my team,” Blair said. “We poured it on, and they didn’t let off the gas.”
Dawson Parker led ACCS with 11 points, and Julian Wilson had nine.
“Some of the pressure they were applying got to us,” Spears said. “They got some easy baskets. We’re missing layups on one end, and they’re making layups on the other end.
“I thought in the first half we played well. The third quarter, they got up on us and pressured us.”
Trinity will attempt to keep its winning ways going Jan. 3 when it hosts Porter’s Chapel, while ACCS hosts Brookhaven Academy the same day.
“We’re going to practice, and we just have to gel,” Spears said. “We have to get everybody involved so everyone feels a part. We have good players, we have a team full of good players.”
