The Natchez High Lady Bulldogs entered the MHSAA Region 6-5A Tournament as the number four seed and were not given a chance to keep their season going.
Yet after shocking top-seeded Brookhaven High School in the first round on Monday, Natchez High found themselves in the girls’ championship game against tournament host and second-seeded Provine High School.
Kirdis Clark scored a game-high 23 points and Aja Carter added 11 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Rams 56-51 to claim the championship.
Leading just 16-13 after one quarter of play, Natchez High outscored Provine 17-12 in the second quarter for a 33-25 halftime advantage and did enough in the second half to fend off the Lady Rams.
By winning the Region 6-5A Tournament championship, the Lady Bulldogs receive a first-round bye in the MHSAA Class 5A South State Playoffs and will host either the Region 7 No. 2 seed or the Region 5 No. 3 seed next Friday night in the second round.
Wingfield (boys) 57, Natchez High 52
Natchez High dug themselves too deep of a hole to get out of after a dissapointing first quarter and the Bulldogs’ season came to an end Friday night as they fell to the Wingfield High School Falcons 57-52 in the boys’ consolation game of the MHSAA Region 6-5A Tournament.
Wingfield controlled the action in the first quarter while Natchez High couldn’t get much of anything going offensively. The result was a 15-5 deficit for the Bulldogs at the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs put together a solid second quarter and outscored the Falcons 19-12 to go into halftime down just three points, 27-24.
However, Wingfield kept pace with Natchez High in the second half. Both teams scored 18 points in the third quarter and the Falcons outscored the Bulldogs 12-10 in the fourth quarter.
Izzy Holmes Jr. finished with 18 points and Larry Griffin had 15 points for Natchez High, which ended up at 7-17 overall.
