When the final Clarion-Ledger girls’ basketball polls came out less than two weeks ago, Tallulah Academy was sitting atop the standings in MAIS Class AA.

Yet when the Lady Trojans took on the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints Friday night in the semifinals of the Class AA South State Tournament, they were not the ‘home’ team even though they were playing on their home court.

Led by D’Asia Mitchell and Jasmine Ivory, Trinity Episcopal outscored Tallulah Academy in all four quarters as the Lady Saints stunned the Lady Trojans 56-48.

“It was a good game. Our girls handled the ball real well. We had a lot of steals. They played a good defensive game tonight,” Lady Saints head coach Fay Minor said.

The Lady Saints led the Lady Trojans 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and then used a 12-9 advantage in the second quarter to go up 29-23 at halftime. In the second half, Trinity made sure that Tallulah Academy would not any big runs to get back in the game.

Mitchell led the Lady Saints with 25 points and Ivory added 18 points. Alaina Florice led the Lady Trojans with a game-high 26 points.

Trinity Episcopal (15-10) will take on Claiborne Academy today at 3:15 p.m. in the girls’ championship game. Claiborne Academy held off Amite School Center 35-31.

Trinity Episcopal (boys) 77, Glenbrook School 34

TALLULAH, La. — Kevontaye Caston and Dee Fleming scored 18 points each to lead four Trinity Episcopal players in double figures as the Saints cruised to a 77-34 win over the Glenbrook School Apaches Friday night in a boys’ semifinal-round game at the MAIS Class AA South State Tournament at Tallulah Academy.

Trinity Episcopal’s up-tempo offense combined with a tenacious defense was entirely too much for Glenbrook to overcome. The Saints jumped out to a 29-12 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back.

“Total team effort. We played smothering defense. I couldn’t be prouder of my guys,” Saints head coach Andy Blair said. “We came out gunning tonight, pressing. We stayed on them for four straight quarters, which is when we’re at our best.”

When halftime arrived, Trinity held a commanding 47-22 lead and didn’t let up in the second half.

David Jackson scored 12 points and Jakarius Caston chipped in with 10 points for Trinity Episcopal (20-4). The Saints next play at 6:15 p.m. today in the boys’ championship game against the winner of the Clinton Christian Academy/Union Christian Academy game.
