NATCHEZ — Although LaShey Copelan’s garage sale wasn’t listed as one of Natchez’s top tourist attractions, the Natchez native played tour guide as she was selling baby furniture and gently used clothes Saturday afternoon.
Copelan was wrapping up her two-day sale when The Dart landed on her house on Melrose Avenue Saturday.
Copelan said the garage sale was by all accounts a success. For two days, Copelan and her stepmother sold everything from furniture to baby items from the front step of her house which sits two doors down from the entrance to the Natchez National Historical Park.
“We sold a lot of stuff including a desk, two baby cradles and four car seats,” Copelan said. “It was non-stop work for two days.”
Although the work can be long and tedious, Copelan said the garage sale is also a good time to visit — with friends and even with the occasional tourist.
“A lady and her husband from Tennessee stopped by,” Copelan said. “They were celebrating their anniversary and asked where they could go on Sunday and Monday when most of the antiques stores are closed.”
Copelan said they offered the couple several suggestions.
“We told them about the Trace, Windsor Ruins and other things around town,” Copelan said. “It was really neat that they stopped atthe garage sale.”
The remaining unsold items from the garage sale were going to the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society Paws for a Cause thrift store, Copelan said.
She and her two children, Cole Switzer, 17, and Paige Switzer, 12, will soon be moving to new house across the river in Vidalia, Copelan said. With a brand new 6-week-old great Dane puppy, Copelan said she was looking for a place with a bigger yard before the dog grows to full-size.
“Honestly I have been praying about,” she said. “I don’t how it happened but I was looking for rent houses and we came upon this house with a humungous yard.”
Copelan said she decided to move as soon as she found the house. With the garage sale finished, Copelan said she will now focus on packing up and moving, which she hopes to do in the coming weeks.
