After Mike Bowlin saw a decrease in baseball and softball numbers in his youth league in the past few years, he decided to do something about it.
For its first spring season, Miss-Lou Youth Soccer registration is underway aiming to give kids ages 5 to 18 another chance to get involved in athletics.
“A lot of kids are looking for other things,” said Bowlin, who is president of the league. “Soccer is an all-around game, and it’s all about getting out there and having fun.”
Bowlin said the league hopes to give kids of all levels of expertise a chance to play. He said with baseball and softball, many children feel intimidated.
“You have to practice so much with baseball and softball,” Bowlin said. “With soccer, there are a lot more options. For kids who aren’t as developed, they can play defense and still get to kick the ball. It’s an easier game to play, and we are trying to teach them strategies.”
To pick up a registration packet, visit Hometown Sports in Vidalia. The cost is $60 and includes a jersey, league insurance and a trophy or medal.
The league will be split into ages 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18.
Each team will play seven to eight games on Sundays at the fields behind Walmart at the Vidalia Recreational Complex.
Teams will be selected in the next couple weeks, and league play will begin around the third week of March running through the middle of May.
