Vidalia High School’s baseball team learned Saturday just how crucial it is to stay calm.
With the game tied in the top of the fifth inning, a base hit from Tanner Jenkins allowed Christian Fort to score to give the Vikings (2-1) the edge over Block, 4-3 in the first game of the Bears’ host tournament.
“Our kids battled and got the runs when they need to,” Vidalia coach Mike Norris said. “(Jenkins) just put it in play and got us the score. Any win is a good win.”
The Vikings opened the game in the third inning after Cameron Rodgers hit a triple down the right line allowing Fort and Tony Tolliver to cross home plate.
Tristian Weatherly kept the game rolling with a single and Tyler Cupit ran in the score to put Vidalia up 3-0.
“Once we turned the order over, we were able to get it to come up with the runs,” Norris said. “The bottom of our lineup has been doing a really great job of getting on base.”
Block (0-1) had just the precise response, however, scoring three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.
After Jacob Edwards was walked and Noah Odem hit a single, Brennan Lipman hit a double that scored Edwards.
Odem found home on the first out, and KJ Osteen tied the game by sliding into home plate on a close play.
“I though we got the tag on him,” Norris said.
After Jenkins’ RBI, he got the win on the mound for Vidalia.
Rodgers pitched six innings for the Vikings with 10 strikeouts, and Jenkins pitched the final inning to secure the victory with an additional strikeout.
“(Jenkins) throws the ball hard,” Norris said. “We are pleased with what he can do.”
Block tried to get anything it could by stealing bases in the bottom of the seventh, but coach Stevie McCarthy said it just didn’t work out.
“(Vidalia) knew it and were able to get us out,” he said. “Our bats were dead today. For our first game, I thought we played really well.”
Lipman took the loss for Block, pitching all seven innings. He had 10 strikeouts and just two walks.
Vidalia won its second game of the tournament, 20-0, over Sicily Island and Dom Harveston and J.R. Davis combined for a no hitter.
The Vikings will play again at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rayville, and Block takes on Bolton for an away game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
