SICILY ISLAND — Services for Thomas David Haigh, 62, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, in Baton Rouge, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Sicily Island. He was calm and at peace after fighting for weeks to overcome a severe stroke on Jan. 6, 2017.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Mr. Haigh was born May 15, 1954, in Manhattan, Kan., the son of Norman M. Haigh Jr. and Marian Myers Haigh.
David was one of those rare people who never met a stranger. He was a kind, gentle and generous man. Even though he had his first stroke at age 39, and experienced several more throughout his life, he lived a full life — always with a smile on his face and a joke on his lips.
He grew up near Jonesville on Louisiana Delta Farm with his parents and three siblings, Bunnie, Barbara and Kelly. He was a 1972 graduate of Block High School and attended the University of Northeast Louisiana. He had a variety of jobs before becoming manager of Sibley Farms near Sibley, where he worked with his dad for a number of years.
His son, Thomas Andrew Haigh, was born in 1980, to his first wife.
He and his wife, Barbara Peck Gilbert Haigh, were married Dec. 28, 1988.
He was always happiest when doing something outside and picked up bushels of pecans in the months preceding his last stroke.
Mr. Haigh was preceded in death by his father of Vidalia.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Peck Gilbert Haigh of Natchez and Sicily Island; one son, Thomas Andrew “Andy” Haigh of Vicksburg; his mother of Vidalia; one stepson, Thomas Enright Jr. and wife, Virginia Middleton Enright of Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Madisyn and Abigayl; one grandson, Leland; three step-grandchildren, Ellie, William and Patrick, all of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Marian “Bunnie” Haigh and husband, Peter Van Bavel of Austin, Texas, and Barbara Haigh Bamer of Natchez; one brother, Stephen Kelly Haigh and wife, Melinda Ewing Haigh, of O’Fallon, Ill.; one niece, Katie Jo Haigh of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two nephews, Kenneth Robert Bamer and wife, Hope, of Hattiesburg, and Stephen Michael Bamer of Austin.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Bamer, Stephen Bamer, Jeff Bryant, William Enright, Roger McCranie, Jim Miller and Stanley Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Sicily Island.
