NATCHEZ — With the help of a group of stakeholders, the Natchez-Adams School District is in the process of finalizing the 2017-2018 school calendar.
The current proposal for next year’s district calendar is available for review and comments for 30 days at the school board office in the Braden Administration Building on Homochitto Street.
Under the proposed calendar, students will attend classes for 180 days. School staff will attend for 187 days. School will begin Aug. 8 and end on May 25. Graduation is scheduled for May 25.
Christmas break is proposed to begin Dec. 22. Students will return to school on Jan. 8, 2018.
Superintendent Fred Butcher requested a week-long fall break that is scheduled for Nov. 20 through Nov. 24. The proposed break includes the Thanksgiving holiday.
Under the current proposal, spring break will be March 12 to 16.
Other proposed holidays in which school will be closed include a Mardi Gras holiday on Feb. 12 and 13 and an Easter Holiday from Good Friday, March 30 to April 2.
If necessary, April 2 will be used to make up for any day school was forced to close because of inclement weather.
Stakeholders considered two different calendars. Other options included a Christmas break beginning on Christmas Day. Students would then return to class on Jan. 8.
At the next board meeting, if no objections are brought forth, the calendar will go up for approval by the board to become permanent for the 2017-18 school year.
