Delta Charter School softball coach Jeannie Beach said this year’s team might be the most talented group of girls she’s ever had, and the Lady Storm proved just why that is Saturday morning.

DCS scored 10 runs in the second inning and registered 16 total hits, rolling past St. Frederick in the first game of its home tournament, 17-1, in three innings.

“I like it when everyone is hitting and it’s a team effort,” Beach said. “It’s kind of contagious. When one of them starts hitting like that, they all get that confidence. I could tell that they had confidence today.”

Of the eight Delta Charter players who finished with hits, all but two had multiple in the win.

Makenzie Landers highlighted the first inning with a three-run home run to aid her team to a 5-0 lead at the end of the inning. She finished 2-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

“We have been working on getting prepared on offense and defense,” Beach said. “We have to be able to use our potential every game, and I want them to know every game that they left it all on the field.”

Jania Burns also contributed to the offensive efforts by hitting a perfect 3-3, including a two-RBI double in the second.

As a part of DCS’ first senior class, Burns said she is pleased to see her team finally coming together as a cohesive unit.

“We’ve been struggling to get there mentally,” she said. “It’s so good to see all nine of us hitting the ball. It shows repetition and consistency. We kept the intensity up in the dugout today, and it actually felt like our softball team.”

Burns also pitched all three innings to earn the win for Delta Charter.

While she said it wasn’t her best performance in the circle, tallying just one strikeout, Burns still contributed on defense by fielding a double play to second base to start the second inning.

“You don’t get a lot of those in fast pitch, so that was sweet,” Beach said. “It worked out great.”

Other multiple hitters for DCS included Haley Sharp, going 3-4 with an RBI and three runs, Laken Hood, batting 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs, Darby Beach, going 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Kaityln Dooley with two hits and two runs.

The Lady Storm (5-4)won its second game of the tournament against Franklin Parish, 9-3.

DCS will travel to Forest at 4 p.m. Monday.
