Jefferson County High School’s Kailyn Hammett and Antrell Gales still have one more year to play basketball for the Lady Tigers, but that hasn’t stopped them from already shining.
The Mississippi Association of Coaches chose both the juniors Hammett and Gales to the South roster for the Mississippi Sports Medicine All-Star game. The girls game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. Friday at Mississippi College in Clinton.
“It is a great honor myself, the team and the community,” Jefferson County coach Flora McKnight said.
Hammett led her team to a 20-10 record this past season by averaging 14 points, eight steals and six rebounds a game. The junior guard posted 12 double-doubles on the year and was also named to the MHSAA 7-3A All-Region team.
“She deserves to be chosen,” McKnight said. “She knows the game, and she really is on the next level. She is like a second coach out there on the floor.”
Gales will not play in the game after suffering a season-ending leg injury earlier this year, but McKnight said she is continuing physical rehab and doing well.
Before the injury, the junior center played 15 games and averaged 16 points per contest. She also totaled seven double-doubles.
“That was a big hole to fill,” McKnight said. “You really can’t replace her.”
While Hammett will represent the Lady Tigers during the game, McKnight said she thinks her entire team is filled with all-stars.
“I just want (Hammett) to go out and have fun,” she said. “It’s a chance for her to play with the best, and it’s a big highlight for her. You can’t beat that one.”
