Nearly 50 golfers descended on Duncan Park Golf Course this past weekend to partake in the 42nd Annual Harvest Club Tournament.

And at the end of the 36-hole event, Pete Powell outlasted the large contingent in securing his second-consecutive tournament title.

“I hit the ball really well, but I didn’t putt particularly well,” Powell said. “But I putted well enough to win.”

The Harvest Club has served as a staple in the community for more than four decades.

“This tournament is something I start thinking about around Thanksgiving,” Tournament Director K.G. Watkins said. “The concept of the Harvest Club was to harvest the kids out of the community and give them another avenue to channel their energy toward.”

The two-day competition showcased several area golfers, but also featured participants from a number of different states such as Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and others.

“This year we probably had one of the smallest fields we’ve had in 10 years,” Watkins said. “We’ve got Galveston, Houston, Memphis, Pine Bluff (Arkansas), we were pulling as many as 10 states. We’ve got guys that come from Nashville and Florida.”

Powell posted scorers of 71 and 72 over the weekend, and the Natchez native has now won the tournament four times since 2009.

“The Harvest Club does a great job in sponsoring this tournament,” Powell said. “They do a good job in bringing a lot of out of town people in for the tournament.”

Watkins said the Harvest Club interacts with kids on a regular basis in an attempt to teach and grow the game of golf.

“We give scholarships, and we give clubs to Natchez High School,” Watkins said. “Now we’re giving clubs to Ferriday High School, as well as golf balls in trying to get kids interested in the game of golf. Golf is a great game.”
