Things didn’t go quite as planned for the five members of Cathedral High School’s tennis team that competed Wednesday at the MAIS Class AAA State Tournament at Hall’s Ferry Tennis Center.

South No. 1 seed Natalie Fletcher and Grace Anne White did not advance to the finals after falling to a duo from Manchester Academy, who pulled off the upset in a semifinal match in No. 2 Girls Doubles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

“That match went three hours. It was a hard-fought match. It could have gone either way,” Cathedral tennis coach Beth Foster said. “You could see the exhaustion coming from all four players. I couldn’t ask for any more out of them.”

In No. 1 Girls Doubles, Cathedral’s Emma Hogue and Marty Lewis fell in the semifinals, also falling to Manchester Academy.

“I had high hopes for my girls doubles when we got up there. My girls couldn’t get it done today,” Foster said.

In No. 2 Boys Singles, South No. 2 seed Chase Brooks dropped his match North No. 1 seed Ty Santucci of St. Joe Greenville. Santucci won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
