Trinity mixed-doubles team captures state crown

Trinity Episcopal’s boys’ and girls’ tennis team finished with mixed results Wednesday at the MAIS Class AA State Tournament at Ridegland Tennis Center.
The boys singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles players each won their semifinal matches, but only the mixed doubles team came away with a state championship.
South No. 1 seed mixed-doubles team Grant Falkenheiner and Lucy Pyron took breezed through a duo from Canton Academy, 6-1, 6-0 before taking on some tough competition in South No. 2 seed Braden Smith and Sara Mazzella of Newton County Academy in the finals. Falkenheiner and Pyron, however, persevered in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
In No. 1 Boys Singles, South No. 2 seed Cole Mosby beat a competitor from Tri-County Academy, 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals, Mosby’s quest for another state champion was ended in the finals as he fell to South No. 1 seed Chase Rigdon of NCA in the finals, 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 2 Boys Singles, Trinity’s Hunter Yarbrough advanced to the finals but fell to NCA’s Micah Douglas in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
In No. 1 Girls Doubles, South No. 1 seed McKenzie Smith and Hannah Fitt also advanced to the state championship, but fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
In No. 2 Girls Doubles, South No. 1 seed Mila Robb and Madalyn Falkenheiner needed three sets to beat North No. 2 seed M.H. Williams and E. Williamson of Tri-County Academy, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Then South No. 2 seed P. Rose and M. Graham of Newton County Academy stunned Robb and Falkenheiner in the finals, 6-1, 6-3.
Trinity Episcopal’s boys’ and girls’ teams both finished in second place in the team competitions.
