The 13-to-15 year old Clippers of the Miss-Lou Youth Activities Association demonstrated poise and composure beyond their years Thursday night.

Despite trailing for most of the first quarter and 16-15 at halftime, the Clippers rallied for a 41-22 win over the Jazz in the division’s championship game.

“This feels great,” Clippers coach Montrell Beverly said. “The kids worked hard for this. They deserve this.”

The Clippers big run came in the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Jazz 19-10 in the final period.

Nicholas Council led the charge scoring with 24 points. The slick-handling guard had plenty of help, however, with Jacquan Johnson pouring in 10 points.

“We have been fighting all year,” Beverly said. “We haven’t lost a game all playoffs. We’re like the (Golden State) Warriors right now in the playoffs.”

Trey Boyd led the Jazz with 13 points and also dished a plethora of nifty assists.

“We only have seven guys, and we got tired,” said Jazz coach Reid Richard, whose team hails from Monterey. “My main guy (Boyd) he did a lot, he does everything. But we missed free throws early on, and it was just one of those nights for us. We played a good game, we had a great year.”

Daylen Gray chipped in with eight points while Cole Centanni added seven.

“We played three games in three days (to climb out of the loser’s bracket),” Richard said. “With only seven guys and traveling so much, (reaching the finals) says a lot about them. I love them so much.”

The Clippers’ Kebryne Nix had perhaps the biggest bucket of the night as he tied the game with a 3-pointer just before the third-buzzer.

“I take my hat off to (the Jazz),” Beverly said. “They are a great fundamental basketball team.

“I want to give a shout out to (MLYAA Director) Nook Logan because he’s one heck of a guy for having us together as one.”
