The 38th Annual Natchez Community Cancer Tennis Tournament is just around the corner for game enthusiasts looking for a good time.
The tournament will hit the courts at Duncan Park June 2-4, providing the opportunity for fun and exercise, while also supporting a good cause, event organizer Noreen Pyron said.
“We help support the cancer society in Natchez, and we make a check out for Camp Rainbow for kids to go to,” she said.
Camp Rainbow is a five-day camp dedicated to pediatric cancer patients and survivors between the ages of 6-17 in Mississippi. The camp has been operating for more than 30 years.
“We make a donation toward the camp, then the rest of the money stays here within the community so we know exactly where it’s going to,” Pyron said. “(Camp Rainbow) is real appreciative of the donation and sends us a thank you card every year.”
The two-day tournament will feature divisions of men’s and women’s doubles in addition to a mixed doubles competition. Costs is $35 per person, which will also include breakfast servings June 3-4 in addition to a hamburger dinner Saturday night. Individuals can also get involved in the fun by paying $25 to participate in all non-tennis activities.
“People can pay the ($25) social fee and enjoy the party, all the food and come out for friendship,” Pyron said.
Pyron has been involved with the event for approximately 30 years and said she’s looking forward to yet another strong year.
“It means a lot to me, there’s a lot of work to be done, but there’s a committee and I have had a lot of cancer in my family,” she said. “It’s a special event, a good cause and a lot of fun. It’s good tennis.”
Those looking to get involved can contact Pyron at 601-446-6677 or the Duncan Park Tennis Shop at 601-442-1584.
“We want to encourage everyone to please get their entries in,” Pyron said. “We need folks to get their entries in early.”
