Trinity to host charity games Saturday

Former coaches as well as alumni will ascend at Trinity Episcopal School’s football field Saturday for the third annual Barr and Johnny’s Flag Football Classic.

Cole Brown, who is hosting the event that begins at 1 p.m., said it not only honors the lives of Barr Brown and Johnny Rachal, but also creates scholarships for underprivileged elementary kids.

“My dad died in a plane crash in November 2006. The following February, Johnny died of a heart attack. To remember them, Ryan (Rachal) and I wanted to do something not only to remember them, but we also wanted to create scholarships for less fortunate elementary kids,” Brown said.

He said that, rain or shine, the event will go on.

Five area high school teams will be participating in the double-elimination format event — Trinity Episcopal, Adams County Christian School, Delta Charter School, Jena High School and Clinton Christian Academy.

“The first two years were a lot of co-ed teams. This year it’s high school only. In the past anyone could play in it,” Brown said. “A lot of alumni are coming back. Coach (David) King, Matt Mason and Chris Bunio will be there. That’s three former Trinity coaches. They coached with Johnny and my dad. We want to build on that.”

Brown said that he not only wants this to be the premier 7-on-7 tournament, but he wants there to be 10 teams next year.

“We’ll split the field in half so you can watch two games at the same time. There will be a 15-minute running clock. It’ll probably run until 5 or 6 p.m.” he said.

The event helps raise to send kids to Trinity Episcopal Day School. Brown said at first the scholarships were initially to be given to an outgoing senior, but when he realized that there were other events doing that, he decided to change things up.

“We wanted to provide an ongoing scholarship. We have a girl who is in the third grade who is under scholarship. She was in the public school system. This is going to change her life forever,” Brown said. “I’m trying to make a difference. We’re looking to add a second scholarship in the near future.”

Brown said the first two years of the Barr and Johnny’s Flag Football Classic were very successful. He also said this year’s event will be more competitive thanks to the new format.

“They were successful enough to send a female elementary student to Trinity. We’re building on that success,” he said. “We intentionally have this on Father’s Day weekend. It wasn’t by accident. This is a way remember our fathers.”
