NATCHEZ — City leaders deferred action Tuesday on the proposed “go-cup” ordinance in order to meet with police department leaders to discuss enforceability of the proposed ordinance.

The new state law will allow select municipalities — including Natchez — to establish zones in which bar and restaurant patrons may leave the premises with alcoholic beverages in “go cups.”

Natchez City Planner Riccardo Giani presented some proposed changes to the ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting, such as requiring permitted establishments within the leisure and recreation district to place identifying markers — such as stickers — on cups.

This mechanism, Gianni said, would hold vendors accountable should patrons, for example, drink and drive with a go-cup beverage.
