Second-year Trinity Episcopal football coach Graham Roberts experienced first-hand the tradition that is “Meet the Saints” last year.

While Roberts came away more than impressed by the event, it was the impact left on his mother, Deanie Collier, which left a lasting memory.

“It was her first Trinity event, and I looked up at her in the stands and she had an awe-inspiring look on her face,” Roberts said. “I asked her about it afterward, and she said it was one of the neatest things she’s ever seen.”

Trinity enthusiasts, athletes, faculty and supporters will celebrate another rendition of the event at 6 p.m. today in the school’s gymnasium.

The school will recognize the softball, football, dance and cheerleading teams in addition to the elementary cheerleaders.

“It’s a great way to recognize the people in our school,” said Roberts, who also serves as the school’s athletic director. “These kids put a lot of time and effort and devote themselves to these sports and extracurricular activities. This lets our Trinity family meet them.”

Trinity supporter Kent Knee, who was in attendance in 1968 to attend the school’s first basketball game, said he can remember the function taking place for as long as he can remember.

“It’s a get-together to introduce the kids and the current teams and what everybody is doing,” he said.

The event precedes Friday night’s football season opener when Trinity travels to face Amite School Center.

“They’re going to be extremely physical,” Roberts said. “I watched them scrimmage a few weeks, and (former Wilkinson County Christian Academy) coach Chris McGraw’s guys are always extremely physical. I was very impressed, and you could tell they were excited to hit somebody.”

The Saints are attempting to rebound from a pair of close jamboree losses on the road last Friday night, 7-6 to Heritage Academy and 13-6 to Simpson Academy. Roberts said he thinks his squad could have executed better but was more than impressed with their efforts.

“I feel like we missed some assignments after getting back and looking at the film,” he said. “But we had guys flying around everywhere, and we were playing (MAIS) AAA and AAAA schools. We have 15 kids and they have 50. I think we could have beat either one of them.”

Game time Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
