BALDWYN — Services for Douglas Irving Stowers Jr., 81, of Guntown, who died peacefully at his residence, Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, were 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at Waters Funeral Home Chapel in Baldwyn with the Rev. Bobby Robbins officiating.

Burial followed at Campbelltown Cemetery under the direction of Waters Funeral Home.

Mr. Stowers was born May 3, 1936, in Natchez, the son of Dr. William Kurtz Stowers and Jennie Bishop Stowers.

He was a 1961 of Mississippi State University with a master’s degree in geology. After working in the oil business for a number of years, he moved to Guntown and became a farmer and merchant in business with his father-in-law. He later became a rural mail carrier and spent a number of years taking care of his patrons and friends on his mail route. After he retired, you could usually find him on a lawnmower, plowing the garden, or fixing fences.

He was a member of the Baldwyn Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon and an elder. After the church closed, he attended Guntown Baptist Church.

Mr. Stowers was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Burns Stowers and Dr. Kurtz Stowers; daughter-in-law, Carole Stowers; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Stowers and Jeannie Stowers; and an infant son.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Bryson Stowers; two sons, Douglas Stowers Jr. of Wilburn, Ark., and Bryson Stowers and wife, Daniela, of Guntown; six grandchildren, Christy McElhaney and husband, Nick, of Hernando, Josh Stowers of Baldwyn, Justin and Alex Stowers of Guntown, Jonathan Pope and wife, Shannon, and Adam Pope and wife, Lori, of Olive Branch; six great-grandchildren, Noah and Bryce Collier, Jillian and Isabel Pope, Jacie Stowers and Sawyer Pope; and nieces and nephews, Bill, Jim, Karen, Linda and Kurtz.
