Trinity Episcopal’s Addison Jackson struck a seventh-inning double and scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Saints a come-from-behind victory over Wilkinson County Christian Academy Thursday night, 9-8.

The Lady Rams led at the end of four innings, 6-2, yet Trinity kept its composure late in the rainy matchup, totaling six of its eight hits in the final three frames.

“They kept each other calm and just pushed through,” Trinity coach Jennifer Harrison said. “All the girls stuck with it. I’m proud of them — every single one of them.”

Harrison said her team fell behind early largely because of wet conditions.

Moderate rainfall delayed the game in the first inning for approximately 15 minutes, and the rain continued on and off for the remainder of the game.

“The balls were wet — the field was wet, it kind of messed with everyone,” Harrison said. “It definitely affected us.”

The Lady Rams capitalized early on unsteady pitching, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding another two in the second.

Three of WCCA’s first five runs were scored on wild pitches.

“I think rain had a lot to do with it,” WCCA coach Ben Oliveaux said. “It’s nature.”

Trinity took the lead for the first time in the game, 8-6, during the top of the sixth inning after Jackson, Madie Cooley, Ja’Mescya Queen and Lily Drane registered back-to-back hits. It then limited the Lady Rams to just two more runs to seal the win.

Jackson pitched all seven innings, recording 16 strikeouts along the way.

“They are listening and learning,” Harrison said. “Everything we are teaching them, they are starting to piece it all together and realize how important everything is. I’ve noticed improvements with all of them, and I think this is building their confidence little by little.”

Despite giving up its early lead, Oliveaux said he was pleased with his team’s effort in the close matchup.

Sami Vines led the Lady Rams, batting 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Mallory Bourgeois ended 2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored.

Ava Randall pitched 5.1 innings, taking the loss with 12 strikeouts. She also added an RBI and a run scored.

“For my girls to come out and battle like they did, they learned a lot,” Oliveaux said. “They fought all the way through.”

Jackson ended the night 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Lady Saints. Queen totaled two hits with an RBI and two runs scored.

Trinity (2-2) will host WCCA at 5 p.m. next Thursday, while the Lady Rams (0-3) will be back in action at 4:30 p.m. Monday against Rebul Academy at home.
