Delta Charter School played to a 0-0 tie against Sicily Island High School and then defeated Block High School 6-0 Friday night at the Block Jamboree.
Delta Charter head coach Blake Wheeler said he was pleased with the way the team played on both sides of the ball.
“We moved the ball well. (Against Sicily Island) we got to the red zone twice, but we couldn’t score. We’ve got to work on our red zone offense,” Wheeler said. “The defense played well. It was a team effort.”
Wheeler said that Jake Smith and Freddie Mango stood out defensively for the Storm. Smith had an interception while Mango had two sacks.
Kavarius Whitehead scored on a quarterback sweep that went for 12 yards in the win over Block.
Sicily Island lost its jamboree game to host Block, 8-6. Tyreke Tolliver scored for the Tigers on a 40-yard interception return, but they missed the PAT.
“I thought they did well. Defense did well. I thought we played Delta Charter a better game than against Block,” Sicily Island head coach Donald Money said. “There are things we’ve got to work on — getting off the blocks on defense and blocking better on offense.”
Delta Charter hosts Homer at 7 p.m. Friday to start its 2017 season while Sicily Island hosts Vidalia at 7 p.m. Friday in both teams’ season-opener.
