Glenbrook School’s ground game was just too much for Wilkinson County Christian Academy to handle as the Apaches defeated the Rams 24-14 Friday night.
WCCA got off to a good start when Landon Giroir scored on a 1-yard run and Hunter Burgess ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the Rams an 8-0 lead with 5:48 to go in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the Rams could not keep the momentum going. Damaza Robinson scored on a 40-yard run and Braeden McLemore scored on a 73-yard run to give the Apaches a 12-8 led with 1:30 left in the opening quarter. After a scoreless second quarter, Parker Christy scored on a five-yard run early in the third quarter for an 18-8 lead. The Apaches racked up 424 total rushing yards.
Glenbrook took a 24-8 lead with 5:30 left in the game before D’Mario Weathersby hooked up with Burgess on a 54-yard TD pass just 14 seconds later. However, it would not be enough.
Burgess had 10 carries for 80 yards to go with his long TD reception. Weathersby went 4-for-11 passing for 102 yards and one interception.
WCCA (0-2) hosts Prairie View Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
