With the game still in doubt late in the third quarter, Centreville Academy turned to Stone Reynolds and he delivered in a big way as the Tigers rallied for a homecoming win over the Brookhaven Academy Cougars Friday night, 57-35.
It was also the MAIS District 4-AA opener for Centreville Academy and for much of the first three quarters, it appeared that the Tigers were in big trouble. Dawson Flowers had thrown three touchdown passes between the 3:11 mark of the second quarter and the 4:52 mark of the third quarter to give Brookhaven Academy a 21-14 lead.
And just when it looked like the Cougars had all the momentum on their side, the Tigers had other ideas. Reynolds had touchdown runs of 5, 1, 10 and 20 yards as well as two 2-point conversion runs starting at the 3:02 mark of the third quarter and ending with 9:06 to go in the fourth quarter as Centreville took a 43-21 lead.
Reynolds finished with 257 yards rushing on 26 carries with five touchdown runs to go with two catches for 55 yards. Daniel Vine had 12 carries for 134 yards and one touchdown.
Touchdown runs by Flowers and Tanner Waldrop in a span of 13 seconds got Brookhaven Academy (5-2, 1-1) back in the game at 43-35, but Centreville answered with touchdown runs by Reynolds and Wyatt Brabham. Brabham added 53 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Tyler Thomassie went 4-for-10 passing for 90 yards.
And while Flowers did his best to keep the Cougars in the game, he also threw three interceptions — all of them by Colby Welch.
Centreville Academy (5-2, 1-0) steps out of district play next Friday when it plays at Silliman Institute. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
