NATCHEZ — Services for Elton “Tweety” L. Merritt Jr., who died on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at his residence, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Wyles officiating.

Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Merritt was born Feb. 1, 1952, in Natchez, the son of Elton L. Merritt Sr. and Maxine S. Merritt.

He was a 1971 graduate of Adams County Christian School and attended Louisiana College in Pineville and William Carey University in Hattiesburg.  He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force.

Elton never met a stranger. This was evident by his numerous circle of friends, each of whom invested in his life and made a difference.

Survivors include cousins, Joe Stroope, Willie Stroope, Stephen Stroope and wife, Betsy, of Magnolia, Ark.; and close friend, Helen Mason.

Pallbearers will be Forrest Foster, Taylor Foster, David New Jr., Casey Smith, Jody Smith and Stephen Stroope.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be received by First Baptist Church Natchez and Morgantown Baptist Church
