GREENVILLE — Sterling Yarbrough connected with Cedric Daniels on an 80-yard touchdown pass-and-run with 7:53 remaining and Daniels’ 2-point conversion run proved to be the difference as the MAIS Class A Trinity Episcopal Saints held on for a 34-32 win with the Class AA Greenville Christian School Saints Friday night.
A 15-yard roughing-the-kicker penalty by Trinity Episcopal and three completions led to Keith Lee’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Lawson Stokes with 20 seconds left. The 2-point conversion run was no good, so Greenville Christian had no choice but to go for an onside kick.
The visiting Saints muffed the onside kick and the host Saints recovered, giving them one more opportunity to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. But three straight incomplete passes allowed Trinity to escape with the win.
Yarbrough had three touchdown passes on the night. The other two went for 36 and 38 yards to Jarred Simpson. Chris Genous scored on a 20-yard interception return just 1:23 into the game. Anfernee Thomas scored on a 5-yard run late in the third quarter.
Lee did his best to keep Greenville Christian (2-6) in the game. He had three touchdown runs as well as two touchdown passes.
Trinity Episcopal (3-5) will put its two-game winning streak on the line when it plays at District 3-A opponent Wilkinson County Christian Academy at 7 p.m. next Friday.
