Wilkinson County falls to Hazlehurst in region game, 34-12

WOODVILLE — Hazlehurst High School scored 22 points in the third quarter as the fourth-ranked Indians rallied to beat the Wilkinson County High School Wildcats 34-12 Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-3A action.
Wilkinson County (3-5, 1-2) went into halftime with a surprising 12-6 lead over Hazlehurst on Senior Night. However, the Wildcats could not keep the momentum going in the second half against one of the top teams in Class 3A.
Freddie Byrd III completed 10 of 17 passes for 107 yards, but he was picked off three times by an opportunistic Indians defense. Terrell Coleman had 13 carries for 44 yards. Drequan Cage had four catches for 40 yards to go with a touchdown on a fumble recovery. Terrence Turner scored the other touchdown for the Wildcats in the second quarter.
Wilkinson County plays at Port Gibson High School next Friday at 7 p.m.
