Koby Suggs had four touchdown runs, two of them which went over 40 yards, to lead the Claiborne Academy Rebels to a 42-18 win over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams in an MAIS District 3-A game Friday night.
Suggs had touchdown runs of 44, 3, 7 and 58 yards to go with three 2-point conversion runs. Three of his touchdown runs came in a pivotal 26-point third quarter by Claiborne Academy (4-6, 2-1), which more than likely clinched a playoff berth with the win.
The Rebels had more rushing yards, 301, than the Rams had in total yards, 184. Another factor was the turnover battle — also won by Claiborne Academy. The Rebels turned the ball over once while WCCA (1-9, 1-2) turned it over five times.
Not even the return of D’mario Weathersby at quarterback was enough for the Rams in this game. Weathersby did score on a one-yard run, but he also threw two interceptions and was 1-for-7 passing for 33 yards.
Hunter Burgess had three carries for 60 yards and Hunter Gaines had four carries for 56 yards. R.J. Fisher had one reception for 33 yards to go with 10 tackles and one fumble recovery on defense.
Whether WCCA will make the Class A State Playoffs will be determined when the bracket comes out this weekend.
