NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was arrested Tuesday following an October incident in which he allegedly assaulted a bar patron with an aluminum baseball bat.

Natchez police arrested Sami Kaleva Kivinen, 43, 1705 Merrill St., at approximately 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Kivinen’s teenage son — also allegedly involved in the assault — was processed through the youth court system, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

The incident in question occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 23 at the Under-the-Hill Saloon, Armstrong said.

After Kivinen allegedly got into an altercation with another patron, a bar employee instructed Kivinen to leave, Armstrong said. Kivinen reportedly returned with his son and proceeded to beat the alleged victim over the head outside of the establishment.

“He left and returned later with his son and caused even more of a problem with the (alleged) victim by assaulting the victim with an aluminum bat, causing some lacerations to the victim’s head,” Armstrong said.

Police reportedly received a call at 1:20 a.m., with an officer arriving on the scene 4 minutes later.

The employee was transported to the hospital, though Armstrong said the injuries the man sustained were not major.

Kivinen was released on a $10,000 bond.
