Prep roundup: Natchez girls drop district opener, Ferriday girls, boys notch wins

BROOKHAVEN — The Natchez High Lady Bulldogs got off to a good start, but they could not sustain it in the second and third quarters as they lost to the Brookhaven Lady Panthers 65-48 Friday night in the MHSAA Region 6-5A opener for both teams.

The first quarter ended in an 11-11 tie, but Brookhaven took over during the next two quarters. Led by Silentianna Collins and Tamia Stallings, the Lady Panthers outscored Natchez High 13-7 in the second quarter and 16-9 in the third quarter for a 40-27 lead. Collins led the Lady Panthers with 17

points and Stallings added 12 points.

The Lady Bulldogs were still outscored by Brookhaven 25-21 in the fourth quarter.

Aja Carter led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and Candi Gray had 13 points.

Natchez High (7-7, 0-1) hosts North Pike next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Natchez 86, Brookhaven 85 (boys) OT

BROOKHAVEN — Natchez High School won its first district game of the season Friday night on the road, squeaking by Brookhaven in overtime, 86-85.

Izzy Holmes led the Bulldogs (10-3, 1-0) with 32 points as five Natchez players ended in double digits. Chad Woods scored 15 points, Melvin Myles had 13, Charles Credit added 12 and Christian Williams ended with 10.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they host Wingfield.

Ferriday 62, General Trass 19 (girls)

FERRIDAY — Anasia Turner had a game-high 16 points and Zaniya Curry had 14 points to lead four Ferriday Lady Trojans in double figures as they cruised to a 62-19 win over the General Trass Lady Panthers Friday night to stay undefeated in LHSAA District 2-2A.

Diamond Johnson poured in 12 points and Zhane Green added 10 points for Ferriday, which had its way with General Trass for much of this game. The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 23-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime with a commanding 35-7 advantage.

Ferriday (15-3, 3-0) plays at district and Concordia Parish rival Vidalia High School next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Ferriday 82, General Trass 49 (boys)

FERRIDAY — Dantrieze Scott scored 15 points and Marquell Griffin had 14 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Ferriday Trojans as they defeated the General Trass Panthers 82-49 Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

Six players for Ferriday ended up scoring in double figures. Curtis Collins finished with 13 points while Montrieze Sandidge and Travonte Pryor added 11 points each, and Jimmy Lee chipped in with 10 points.

General Trass hung tough with the Trojans in the first quarter and was only down 18-15 at the end of that quarter. Then Ferriday started to pull away in the second quarter and had its way with the Panthers in the second half, outscoring them 46-23.

The Trojans (10-9, 3-0) visit district and Concordia Parish rival Vidalia High School at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday.

Jefferson County 59, Heidelberg 38 (girls)

COLLINS — Dea’breaun Turner provided 23 points as the Lady Tigers defeated the Heidelberg Lady Oilers 59-38 Friday afternoon at the Collins Tournament.

Neither team was able to pull away from the other in the first half, which ended with Jefferson County holding a slim 25-21 lead. Then the Lady Tigers showed their prowess by outscoring Heidelberg 20-7 in the third quarter for a 45-28 lead.

Kailyn Hammett finished with 19 points, 11 assists and two steals while Antrell Gales had six points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Tigers (13-1), who play at Brookhaven High School next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
