Under pressure: Trinity senior turns tension on court into positive energy

Trinity Episcopal’s Cedric Daniels thrives off of pressure.

On the basketball court, the senior Saint said it almost always takes him a few minutes to settle in.

“The pressure can cause you to break,” Daniels said. “It can sometimes be hard to practice handling pressure and then using it in a game, but once I get comfortable, I’m fine.”

Daniels said out of everything that could go wrong, he worries about the basics the most.

“I get worried about missing something easy,” he said.

Despite the concerns, however, Daniels has an easy fix to make sure everything goes smoothly.

“Just score,” he said.

On the other side of the ball, Daniels said he is much more comfortable.

“I’m a defensive player, and you really have to work hard to do that,” he said. “I’m good at hustling, and it’s important because if you don’t hustle then you don’t get the ball. The more you get the ball the more you can score.”

Besides looking out for his own actions, Daniels said support from all around makes a big difference in easing the pressure.

“I love to get good feedback from my teammates,” he said.

His biggest motivator, Daniels said, is fellow senior Kris Genous.

“He’s always says stuff like ‘Good shot’ or ‘Good defense,’” Daniels said. “But, we are the main ones that argue, too. We argue about everything, but it’s a good thing.”

Daniels said his relationship with Genous pours into the rest of the team, too.

Rounding out the senior class are Mark McGraw, Cedric Green and Dee Fleming.

“We are all pretty funny,” he said. “We can be mad at each other one minute and then be fine the next. We are always laughing with each other.”

In the end, Daniels said he wouldn’t think his accomplishments would be as great without the pressure.

“Pressure is a good thing for me,” he said. “Basketball requires a lot of talent, and there are some things I know I can do that makes me stand out. It really challenges me. I just don’t want to let my teammates down.”

Daniels and the rest of the Saints will be back in action Tuesday night when they host Discovery Christian School.
