JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi officials are investigating whether highway patrol cadets have been mistreated during their training.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner Marshall Fisher said in a statement Monday that he is ordering an “aggressive internal investigation” into allegations that current Mississippi Highway Patrol employees mistreated trooper cadets.

The Clarion Ledger reports the investigation is focusing on whether cadets were hazed. Department spokesman Warren Strain declined further comment to The Associated Press, citing the investigation.

Fisher promises anyone who acted wrongly will face legal consequences.

The cadet class, which originally numbered 91 applicants, is scheduled to graduate March 6.

In 2011, seven cadets were sent to the hospital for various reasons during the first week of trooper school, including dehydration.
