Leadership Natchez releases fundraising flamingos

NATCHEZ — Pink flamingoes are invading the front yards of a few Natchezians.
No, they aren’t live flamingoes. They are of the plastic sort, and they are popping up in some people’s yards overnight.
It is all in good fun, and it is all part of a flocking fundraiser Leadership Natchez is sponsoring to benefit local charities.
Leadership Natchez president Will Christian said two separate flocks are currently in rotation. Each flock raises $20 to $25 on average.
Christian said the proceeds would benefit the Natchez Stewpot and possibly the Natchez-Adams Humane Society, depending on how much money is raised.
“It’s kind of funny,” he said, “just to wake up one morning and find flamingoes in your front yard.”
Christian said he chose the first house to receive the flocking. From there, participants call the number on the sign, send a cash donation and choose the next house that gets flocked.
Lee Carby, owner of Satya Yoga Wellness Center, said she found the flamingoes in her yard Thursday morning last week.
“I loved it,” Carby said. “My daughter thinks it’s really fun that they’re in our front yard … and of course I do, too.”
Carby said she was at the time contemplating who to send the flock to next.
“I’m probably going to send them to somebody who takes pride in their front yard and knows that it’s for a good cause,” Carby said.
Christian said the two flocks have visited eight houses since the fundraiser began about two and a half weeks ago. He said the flocking would continue until the humor dies down.
“I think it’s something fun for people to do,” Christian said, “and something to laugh at.”
