FERRIDAY — Services for Joan Applegate Pitcher, 76, of Ferriday, who died Sunday, March 11, 2018, at Riverland Medical Center, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday with the Rev. Mark Richardson and the Rev. Ronnie Randle officiating. 

Burial will follow at Harrisonburg Cemetery in Harrisonburg, La., under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ms. Pitcher was born on Saturday, Oct. 11, 1941, in Lafayette, La., the daughter of Donald V. Applegate and Marianna Evans Applegate. She was a resident of Ferriday and a member of Lake St. John Community Baptist Church. As a child, she lived in Bolivia in South America with her family. She graduated from Waterproof High School and attended LSU in Baton Rouge.  Ms. Pitcher owned and operated Haphazard Horticultural Services doing landscaping architecture.  She was a member of the Louisiana Horticulture Society of Lafayette serving as President. She also served as President of the Ferriday Garden Club, Horticulture Chairman of the Louisiana State Horticulture Society and as a member of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation. 

Ms. Pitcher took many mission trips to Oklahoma, Kentucky and Honduras.  She also loved volunteering with Bingo at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.   

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother-in-law, Laney T. Walker.

Survivors include one daughter, Merritt Pitcher Taylor and husband, Jeffery, of Ferriday; one brother, Robert Evans Applegate and wife, Diane, of Ferriday; one sister, Martha A. Walker of Natchitoches, La.; one step-son, Robert M. Pitcher IV of Ruston, La.; three grandsons, Jeffery Taylor Jr., James Cody Taylor and wife, Cambree, and Cole Evan Taylor; one granddaughter Candace Merritt Grantham and husband, Quincy; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jeffery Taylor Jr., James Cody Taylor, Cole Evan Taylor, Robert Manson Pitcher IV, Christian DeCecchini and Isreal DeCecchini.
