NATCHEZ — Graveside services for Obye Jo Simmons, 91 of Vidalia, who died Thursday, April 5, 2018, in Texas, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Ralph Webber, Rev. Larry Whittington and David Taylor officiating, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday.

Obye Jo Simmons was born on Friday, Aug. 13, 1926 in Orlando, Fla., the daughter of Joel and Claude Carr of Bogalusa, La., and passed away Thursday, April 05, 2018 in Texas.

She was a resident of Miss-Lou for more than 50 years. She loved working in her flower beds, having fun with family and friends at the lake and loved doing missionary work with The Kingdom Builders.

Obye Jo was a member of Ferriday Garden Club, Ferriday Community Club and a member of Vidalia First Baptist Church and a Pink Lady for Riverland Medical Center.

She was a former employee of Big Joe Oil Company for 12 years and Deputy Sheriff Coordinator for the 911 system in Concordia.

She was the previous owner of Dairy Bar and Gulf Station in Vidalia for many years with her husband Elwood Simmons.

Obye Jo will always be remembered for her service to Concordia Parish and will be truly missed by all who knew her.    

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Elwood Simmons; daughter, Claudia and husband, John Cooper of Jena; five brothers, Billy, Ralph, George, Joel Jr. and Nunny Carr; sister, Anna Lou Kivette; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Cowan.

Survivors include: daughter, Derinda Smith and husband Ricky of Vidalia; two grandsons, Stephen Cowan and wife Kim of Houston and Michael Cowan and wife Chasity of North Dakota; two granddaughters, Ashley Elveston of Natchez  and Alicia Mitchell and husband Michael Jay of Natchez;  10 great-grandchildren: Cody and wife Lindsey Cowan, Savannah, Cole, Cory, Selah, Maggie and Joel Cowan, Kaitlyn and husband Adam Sherman, Hayden and wife Tayllor Cowan and Braxton Elveston; and nine great-great grandchildren, Kilie and Carson Cowan, Chloe  Cowan and Cole Butler, Jensen and Jamison Sherman, Chloe Curlee and Savanna and Starlyn Mitchell.

She is also survived by her lifelong friend Nell Harrell of Vidalia and a special friend, James Pratt of Vidalia.

Pallbearers will be Employees of Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office. Honorary pallbearers are her great-grandchildren and Arthur Lewis.
