NATCHEZ — As temperatures soar into the 90s with high humidity to boot, experts say people should take precautionary measures before an outing in the sun.
This week’s temperatures will be in the low to mid-90s, but heat indices will near 105 degrees. Though the forecast shows a limited threat, David Cox of the National Weather Service in Jackson said he still encourages people to exercise caution when braving the summer heat.
“We’re probably going to experience heat issues due to the temperatures being in the 90s and the humidity being so high,” Cox said.
So far, this summer has not been much hotter than last summer, he said.
“The actual heat values and temperatures are pretty much in line, maybe a couple degrees above normal.”
Recent weeks have shown a large number of isolated thunderstorms due to a low-pressure system in the South. However, Cox said we could be entering a drier period that is typical for this time of year.
He said people should drink plenty of water and wear light-colored clothing when going outside. He said darker garments would absorb heat faster while light colors will reflect sunlight and make the wearer feel cooler.
Cox said to be aware that the temperatures in automobiles are a lot higher, so parents should be mindful of their children or pets sitting in the car for any length of time.
“Even if there’s not a heat advisory, it could still be dangerous,” he said.
