NASD eyes used buses

NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams School District is considering spending $258,400 to purchase four used buses for athletes to use for travel to and from games.
Discussion of the topic was the subject of a special called meeting of the NASD board Monday afternoon, including specifically how to move the district’s funds in the budget to purchase the buses.
The quoted $258,400 cost of the four buses would include delivery and amenities.
Superintendent Fred Butcher said three of the four buses have fewer than 50,000 miles on them, with the fourth having just more than 50,000 miles.
The board delayed action on purchasing the buses until board members could obtain more information about the age of the vehicles and the time left on the warranties.
“Once we get the actual mileage and age,” Butcher said, “we can get a letter with how much of the warranty is left.”
Also during Monday’s meeting the board voted unanimously to purchase a state-contracted mini-van to transport food to students of the Natchez Early College campus at Copiah Lincoln’s Natchez campus.
Butcher said the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Child Nutrition agreed to split the cost of a $16,335 van with the district’s special revenue funds.
In other matters at Monday’s meeting:
* The board received two quotes for roof repairs at Morgantown Middle School — one for $40,700 and one for $90,000. The school’s attorney, Bruce Kuehnle, said the $40,700 quote did not meet the board’s requirements because it does not include necessary insurance information. No action was taken.
* The board discussed moving five mobile units from McLaurin Elementary and Natchez High schools to the NECA campus at Co-Lin to fill the need for classroom space. Transporting the units has an estimated cost of $26,000 plus materials. The board is exploring a second option to do a lease or purchase agreement for more space. No action was taken.
* The board approved travel for three staff members to summer conferences with an estimated cost of $3,000.
* The board moved its July 17 scheduled meeting to 4 p.m., July 16, at the NASD boardroom.
