NATCHEZ — An email exchange between two Adams County supervisors resulted in a complaint being filed Wednesday at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

District 4 Supervisor Ricky Gray filed the complaint against District 1 Supervisor Mike Lazarus. Gray told deputies he felt threatened by an email Lazarus sent him after Tuesday’s supervisors’ meeting.

The sheriff’s report states that Gray alleged Lazarus made several unspecified allegations against Gray, so Gray sent an email to Lazarus that said, in part, “at the last board meeting I said no one speaks for me but me, so keep my name out of your mouth.”

The report said Lazarus replied with an email that said:

“Who do you think you are out telling people you are going to get me voted out. There are things going on at port that everyone knows is not right, but you say is ok.

“The Board of Supervisors was a good board before you got elected. But if you have a problem with me we can settle it any way you want. I went through this with (former supervisor) Henry (Watts) and I refuse to do it again.

“I don’t care if I get re-elected. Unlike you I can support myself without a government job. I wait for your response on how you want to handle this. My suggestion to you is keep you’re a** in District 4 before you bite off more than you can chew.”

Gray said he felt threated by the email and reported it to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Travis Patten said no charges have been filed against Lazarus.

“(The report) is just going to go on file,” Patten said. “No further action will be taken unless the complainant (Gray) chooses to pursue it.”

Gray said he does not want to push the matter any further.

“I was trying to handle this in the professional and right way,” he said. “I don’t wish to leave a bad mark on the county. … I just want it to go away.”

Lazarus said he did send the email and said he wished the matter could have been settled without getting the sheriff’s office involved.

“I was hoping that he and I could sit down and settle this like gentlemen and let it go,” he said. “I let it go until he sent the email stating ‘keep my name out of your mouth.’ Hopefully, we cleared the air and got it over with. We’ve got better things to do.”

Lazarus said he and Gray did not agree on other matters as well, specifically financial dealings with the Adams County Port.

“Ricky is saying that we need to stay out of the port’s business. … There were expenses that I don’t agree with,” Lazarus said.

Lazarus did not elaborate on the issues of disagreement regarding the port. He said Gray had been telling different people that he should not be in office.

“(Gray) is out telling people that I don’t need to be re-elected,” Lazarus said. “I’m not going to tell people who to vote for. People make their own decisions. I’m a supervisor so I can help Adams County. I’m just sorry it got to this point. … This has bothered me for a while, and I let it build up; and I shouldn’t have.”

Gray said he and Lazarus did not exchange words other than what was said in the email exchange and would not comment further.
