NATCHEZ  — A Natchez man was arrested Sunday after he was caught with one of the firearms stolen in April from a local sporting goods store; a judge released the man on a recognizance bond shortly after his arrest, said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.

Kaleb Robinson, 18, 550 Lower Woodville Road, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm early Sunday after deputies said they discovered a gun under the driver’s seat of the his vehicle. The gun was reportedly stolen from Sports Center during a burglary in April.

During the Sports Center robbery four people were captured on video surveillance trying to enter the story, where ultimately several firearms were taken. Patten said the sheriff’s office and Natchez Police Department have slowly been recovering the firearms.

Patten said he was disappointed Robinson was freed on a $1,000 recognizance bond, because the charge is a felony. Patten said before Robinson had completed the booking process at the Adams County Jail, Adams County Justice Court Judge Patricia Dunmore ordered the suspect to be freed Sunday on the recognizance bond.

“The fact you have a stolen gun that was reported through the ATF and was reported stolen from one of our local mainstays, I think that would have warranted a little more time …” Patten said. “I understand doing this type (of thing) on misdemeanors, but this is a felony charge.”

Sheriff’s office deputies said they were patrolling the area of Providence Playground when they noticed a car sitting in the back of the playground and made contact with four individuals in the vehicle, one of whom was identified as Robinson.

Deputies said they noticed tobacco on the ground outside of the car and suspect Robinson may have emptied out a cigarette to fill with marijuana. Deputies asked Robinson if he had any marijuana in the vehicle. Robinson admitted to deputies that he did and gave them permission to search the car. In their search deputies said they found a small amount marijuana and a black handgun under the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

Deputies checked the firearm’s serial number and discovered the gun was listed as being stolen in a national crime database..
