NATCHEZ — A Natchez resident remained behind bars Thursday at Adams County Jail following a second arrest in fewer than two weeks on drugs and firearms charges.

Kelvin Johnson, 20, was first arrested July 15 on Abbot Street, where deputies said they chased him on foot and had to use a stun gun to subdue him.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies said they searched Johnson’s vehicle and found 2.5 ounces of marijuana and a loaded pistol.

Adams County Justice Court Judge Patricia Dunmore freed Johnson on a $1,000 recognizance bond in his initial court appearance July 16.

“It is disheartening to our officers when they work as hard as they do,” said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten in response to Johnson’s release.

Little more than a week had passed before Johnson was arrested again on Dumas Drive on July 28 with another ounce of marijuana, a loaded pistol and baggies in his possession, said Maj. Shane Daugherty of the Natchez-Adams Metro Narcotics Task Force.

Daugherty said Johnson did not resist the second arrest and was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession and enhanced sale of a controlled substance inside of a school-zone, firearm enhancement and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Johnson has since remained in Adams County Jail, and the initial bond of $1,000 has been revoked with a new bond of $20,000 issued for the first arrest only, said Lt. Cal Green, spokesperson for Adams County Sheriff’s Office. Green said no bond has been set for the second arrest and arrangements have been made for an initial court appearance 9 a.m. Aug. 14 with Judge Dunmore presiding.
