BAKER, La. — Cathedral High School’s defense forced six turnovers as the Green Wave defeated the Central Private School Rebels 28-0 Friday night in the MAIS District 5-AAA opener for both teams.
Cathedral took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and then scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 21-0 lead. Tyrieke Lee rushed for two touchdowns in the first half on runs of 4 and 19 yards, while Lance Gaude returned a punt 50 yards for the other score.
The final score for the Green Wave came on a 9-yard run from quarterback J.T. Taylor, who ended the games with 16 carries for 73 yards on the ground. Lee rushed 10 times for 55 yards and his two scores.
Despite the win, head coach Chuck Darbonne said the offense could have played much better.
“Offensively, we were not very sharp. We were sloppy — a lot of first-game mistakes,” Darbonne said. “We made a few big plays.”
Darbonne said his defense played “10 times better than the offense.”
Sam Mosby ended with two interceptions and Gaude and Landon Lees each had one.
“I thought defensively we played great. We played very good in the secondary,” Darbonne said.
Cathedral (1-0, 1-0) hosts Christian Home Educators Fellowship at 7 p.m. next Friday.
